Political Signs. Our election season is upon us, so it's an appropriate time to remind residents that the WeatherStone Rules and Regulations specify restrictions on the timeframe, quantity and location of political signs. Page 6, Number 8 of the Rules and Regulations state the following:

8. Signs. Without prior written approval of the WeatherStone Community Association Board of Directors, no sign or notice of any kind shall be placed anywhere on the property for public view except no more than one (1) property “For sale” sign or political sign no higher than three (3) feet measured from ground level to the highest point of the sign shall be permitted.  Directional real estate signs are not permitted within common or limited common areas.  One political sign may be placed on the front lawn of a single-family residence or on the porch railing of a townhouse residence two weeks prior to an election that must be removed the day after the election. Videographer and Drone Operator at WeatherStone. The Board of Directors received a notice from a planner at Natural Lands that they are creating a video on conservation subdivisions, specifically, the importance of designing the open space first. They will be featuring Weatherstone as an excellent example of compact development surrounded by well-designed open space and trails. On Tuesday, October 4th, in the afternoon, a videographer/licensed drone operator will be filming the open space, village greens and streetscape at Weatherstone. In filming, they will remain on public sidewalks and trails.

Completing an Architectural/Landscape Request Form. This is a reminder that a complete Architectural/Landscape Request Form is required for all exterior alterations or additions, including replacing roof shingles damaged by this summer’s hail storm.  We know that it is sometimes difficult to schedule the work with contractors, but the process can be streamlined and delays in Board approval can be avoided if the Architectural/Landscape Request is complete.

Please review the checklist on Page 2 of the Architectural/Landscape Request Form and make sure you submit all of the following:
  • Contractor’s Certificate of Insurance (Box marked ‘Certificate Holder’ (bottom left corner) must contain your name and address, not the contractor, association name or township)
  • Contractor's Proposal
  • Specification of materials (Colors, types, etc.)
  • Color Pictures (Siding, Windows, etc.)
  • Description of area (Size, Dimensions, etc.)
  • Detailed Diagram with measurements of area of proposed modification/addition
  • Plot Plan of your lot showing location of modification/addition (May be obtained from your township)
  • List species or types of trees/plants

Rules Regarding Pets. Frequently, the Board receives complaints about neighbors not picking up after their dogs, or if they do pick up after them, they don't discard the waste in an acceptable manner. Sometimes the doggie bag is tossed in the grass by the sidewalk or left on the sidewalk itself. Other times it is deposited in a neighbor's trash bin. The Board has continually reminded residents to be good neighbors, but it seems to be a hopeless situation because it is the most frequent complaint the Board receives. As stated on Page 5 of the WeatherStone Rules and Regulations, "... It is the responsibility of pet owners to immediately remove animal waste deposited by their pet. Removal should be made in a sanitary manner and placed into the pet owner’s refuse container—not a neighbor’s refuse container..."
Annual Meeting of the Association. The annual meeting of the Association was held on Wednesday, May 18 at 6:00 PM at the Henrietta Hankin Library Annex. Click here to access a PDF version of the meeting presentation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the results of the election to the WeatherStone Board of Directors for a term of three years was announce by Mark F. Kuhn representing the Association's Property Management Company - Shew Community Management.  The candidate elected was John Smith.
Townhouse Roof Replacement Project. The Board of Directors has been evaluating the potential need to replace the shingles on eleven (11) buildings since late 2021 following a hailstorm that hit our community in July of that year.  A comprehensive evaluation was performed by a roofing company and an engineering company leading to the decision to replace the roofs. A contract has been signed with Eiseman Construction to perform the work, which is scheduled to begin Thursday, August 11th (weather permitting).

A pre-construction meeting was held at the Henriette Hankin Library Annex on the evening of July 27, 2022.  Click here to download a PDF version of the presentation slides.  In addition, a pre-construction document is available to residents whose roofs are scheduled to be replaced.  Click here to access that document.
New Board Member. The Board of Directors would like to welcome Bob Williams to the Board effective July 1st, 2022.  Bob has agreed to join us as the Treasurer and Townhome Representative. He will be completing the last year of the three-year term vacated by Maurice Ward who decided to resign as of June 30th.  We would like to thank Maurice for his efforts and contributions over the last 5 years as President of the Board.

Although Bob and his wife Claire have only been living in our community for a year, he has been very involved in various WeatherStone activities.

We thank Bob for joining us and look forward to working with him.

Notification from the West Vincent Township Chief of Police.
Please be advised that the West Vincent Chief of Police contacted the Board of Weatherstone and requested that the Board advise all Weatherstone residents that dumpsters may not be placed on any of the streets throughout Weatherstone.

Police Chief Michael Swininger advised the Board that, due to the narrow streets throughout Weatherstone, a fire truck would not be able to safely negotiate the roadways with a dumpster partially occupying a roadway.

All dumpsters, therefore, must be placed on a resident’s private property.
The Board understands that, given the number of roofs being repaired/replaced throughout the community, this poses an inconvenience but thanks all residents for respecting this request.

Arborist's Preliminary Review of WeatherStone Street Trees.
Today, the Board received some preliminary feedback from an arborist employed by Bartlett Tree Experts regarding our community street trees. We asked him to look at specific areas in our community where Ash trees have died and have been removed and where Ash trees that have not yet been removed but are in distress and will most likely die. We also asked him to look at the large London Plane (Sycamore) trees in and around WeatherStone Park and the block nearest the park where most of these types of trees exist. The Board will pursue a proposal for a more comprehensive inventory/management plan, but since the street trees are a major concern of our residents, we wanted to get some information as quickly as we could.

As most residents are aware, there are many varieties of street tress planted throughout the community. The arborist recommended replacement species based on several factors. These factors include:
  • The other tree species nearby
  • Known soil conditions within the community
  • Known pest issues within the area
  • Long-term tree size and growth habit
  • Flowering and fruit litter

His recommendations for replacement by area are as followings:
  • For the area on Windgate Drive between Sundance Drive and Rosewood Drive where many Ash trees were removed, the Arborist recommended Red Maple or Linden Trees as replacements. He cautioned that Red Maples had been a favorite tree of the Spotted Lanternfly but seems to feel that the infestations of the Spotted Lanternfly are no longer a concern in our area.
  • Around the circle of Rosewood Drive, he recommended Katsura.
  • For the area on Fairmount Drive across from Butterfly Park where some Ash trees are dying, he recommended Zelkova.
  • On the corner of Pinehurst Drive and Fairmont Drive across from Evergreen Park where trees have been removed, he recommended Red Maple or Black Gum.
The Board will continue to engage with Bartlett Tree Experts regarding the issue of the street trees as we go forward with our investigations and will keep the community informed.

11/03/2021 – Status and follow-up to the Special Meeting held on September 30, 2021.
During the month of October, the Board has made forward progress on several of the items and issues discussed at the Special Meeting.
  • Board Membership, Election Cycle, and Vacancy – Interest forms submitted to Shew Community Management were reviewed and the Board vacancy was filled by John Sullivan. John previously served as the Board Secretary from September 2019 until July 2020, filling the term left vacant by John Stoudt’s retirement from the Board.
  • Plan for Replacement of Street Trees – The Board has been actively working with Bartlett Tree Experts to develop a plan and recommendations for our street trees. Bartlett Tree Experts did a preliminary review of the community’s street trees, a summary of which will be posted in this News page.
  • Review of Budget – At the time of the Special Meeting, the annual budget cycle was nearing its completion and the 2021 budget had already been submitted to Shew Community Management. The Association's annual budget meeting has been scheduled for November 10, 2021.
  • Community Landscaping Efforts – During the month of October, the following occurred:
    • DiStefano Landscaping continued their weekly schedule of grass cutting and leaf blowing.
    • Bartlett Tree Experts looked at specified areas within the community where Ash trees have been removed or are dying and provided a list of recommendations for replacement of these trees. The arborist from Bartlett Tree Experts also looked at the area around WeatherStone Park as well as the surrounding block where the majority of London Plane (Sycamore) trees were planted. A summary of Bartlett Tree Expert's recommendations will be posted separately.
    • The community swimming pool was closed, and all furniture was stored for the winter.
    • Following the closing of the community pool, our pool contractor (Progress Pool Management) engaged the services of a sub-contractor to replace the coping and tile on the main pool and kiddy pool. This work has been completed. Replastering of the kiddy pool was begun, but the remaining replastering work will be completed in the Spring as the weather is no longer conducive for this work to be done.
    • Additional plans for future pool and landscaping efforts planned for 2022 will be discussed at November’s budget meeting.
  • Formation of Subcommittees – The Board is committed to forming committees. In the month of October, a draft has been written describing the various committees being formed. Many residents have expressed a desire to become a member of a committee, so as soon as the Board has finalized the committee descriptions, a notice will be posted on this News page of the community’s website asking residents to submit their interest in being on a committee. In the meantime, a few residents are actively working with the Board on special projects such as the effort to replace shingles on some townhouses damaged by this past summer’s hailstorm. This will be a huge undertaking for which a special projects committee may be needed.
  • Communication – Since John Sullivan rejoined the Board, he has updated the community website with the goal of keeping residents continually informed as evidenced by posts made since the beginning of October. The Board is committed to keeping the website updated and residents informed on a regular basis.
  • Governance and Bylaws Review – The Board currently has no plans to review.
  • Enforcement of Established Policies – The Board currently has no plans to review.

10/14/2019 - Shew Community Management Website. WeatherStone's property management company, Shew Community Management (SCM), has updated their website. Of particular importance to residents of WeatherStone is that the URL for their "Contact Us" page has changed. This is important if you have bookmarked the old page.

Using the SCM "Contact Us" page is the exclusive way to contact the WeatherStone Board of Directors for any issues related to the community, including requesting Landscaping and Architectural changes. The new "Contact Us" page for SCM is: https://www.shewmanagement.com/contact-us/.
